Regenerative Medicine
Regenerative Medicine is a relatively new term in the scope of historical medicine. I, Dr. Dennis Lox, am a medical history researcher. It can be seen in many paths of life that history repeats itself, and therefore knowledge can be learned from the past. I have delved into texts dating to the 1600's, as well as Civil War medical texts, to find meaning in ways of treating chronic pain, as well as to find an understanding of how patterns of behavior in humans have changed over the centuries. I have edited two medical textbooks and written eight medical textbook chapters. I have lectured around the country on numerous topics.
I have spent 20 years treating patients, and regenerative medicine truly is the most exciting breakthrough I have seen in medicine.
"Degenerative Medicine" has dominated this century. Finding new drugs to stop the pain of arthritis, new surgical techniques, diet and exercise, and controlling the effects of stress.
I spent many years writing thousands of prescriptions for anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, physical therapy, and diet and exercise recommendations.
I learned through the years, that we were just temporarily halting the symptoms of the degenerative cascade - the ultimate illusion of helping, without fixing the problem. The problem is we age, but the question is can we affect the way we age?
Enter, Regenerative Medicine......halting or reversing the wear on our bodies, joints or the spine, or healing acute injuries from sports or trauma in a rapid fashion.
The era of stem cell technology is here. Beta Islet Cells of the human pancreas have been cloned to produce insulin for diabetic patients. Meniscal tears of the knees can be healed with an injection of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) or injecting your own harvested stem cells from bone marrow or Adipose Tissue (your fat). Universal studies at acclaimed universities such as Harvard, Duke and Cambridge have treated patients with disabling conditions even of the nervous system, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Parkinson's Disease, stroke and even spinal cord injuries with this technology.
I have utilized this approach in sports medicine, as well as degenerative and rheumatoid arthritis, and neurologic disorders. As an avid athlete with multiple injuries (and a few surgical scars of my own), I will implement these procedures in treating my family, friends and, with help of my colleagues, on myself.
As I previously stated, as a medical historian, we have entered a new chapter in the books. The Age of Regenerative Medicine will be significant, and it has already begun.
